Fluid Imaging Technologies Announces FlowCam® Cyano for Early Detection and Monitoring of Cyanobacteria

FlowCam 8000 FlowCam CyanoSCARBOROUGH, Maine – November 12, 2015 – Laboratory instrumentation manufacturer Fluid Imaging Technologies, Scarborough, Maine is pleased to introduce FlowCam® Cyano for the early detection of harmful cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in fresh bodies of water. Cyanobacteria can produce toxins which can be harmful, even fatal, to humans and animals when large blooms occur. Based on proven dynamic imaging particle analysis (DIPA) technology, the new patent-pending FlowCam Cyano represents the next-generation FlowCam platform.

FlowCam Cyano applications include, early detection and monitoring of cyanobacteria, algal population dynamics and classification, and water resource management and research.

Key benefits for FlowCam Cyano are:

  • Accurate, automated discrimination of cyanobacteria from other algae
  • Further classification of all algae using image attributes
  • Significant cost and time savings versus manual microscopy
  • Integral bio-volume and cell density calculations
  • Facilitates proactive treatment for taste and odor algae along with cyanobacteria

Most water quality facilities currently have to quantify cyanobacteria by having expert taxonomists manually examine samples using a microscope, which is time and labor intensive. Facilities that do not have this capability have to send their samples out for chemical, biochemical or molecular-based testing, which is also expensive and with delays of days, or even weeks, between sampling and receiving test results. The combination of FlowCam Cyano and VisualSpreadsheet® pattern recognition software can enable facilities to be much more proactive in identifying and treating harmful algal blooms, including cyanobacteria, saving time and money and better protecting their customers.

“At Fluid Imaging Technologies, we’re dedicated to constant product improvement to meet the needs of our customers,” said Harry Nelson, Vice President of Aquatic Markets. “The new instrument was developed specifically to address the growing need for early identification of cyanobacteria, which has become more frequently reported in the news of late. It is a serious issue that needed to be addressed.”
